THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION AND STUDENTS’ SPEAKING PERFORMANCE OF ELEVENTH GRADE AT STATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 8 BATANGHARI

The aim of this study was to investigate significant correlation between students’ motivation and students’ speaking performance of the eleventh grade students at state Senior High School 8 Batanghari. This a quantitative research, because the researcher tried to describe and test the relationship, it also presented the findings in a numerical form, and analyzed through the use of statistics The result of the study showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning speaking (X variable) and their speaking performance (Y variable). After analyzing both variables by Pearson’s Product Moment formula, it was found that rxy = 0. 529. Based on the result of rxy = 0. 529, it indicates the gravity of correlation in this study was in the medium level. It was considered that there was medium correlation between students’ motivation in learning speaking and students’ speaking performance. Besides, by looking at calculation above, there was significant correlation between X variable and Y variable. It means that students with higher motivation will get better speaking performance than the lower one. In other words, the more motivated students are, the better speaking performance can be achieved. Furthermore, it was found that at degree of significance 5% ro : rt = 0. 529 > 0.361 and at degree of significance 1% ro : rt = 0. 529 > 0. 306. It means that in the significance 5% and 1%, ro (rxy) was bigger than rt . In other words, in the degree of significance 5% and 1%, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states there was correlation between students’ motivation in learning speaking and their speaking performance was accepted. In conclusion, there was significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning speaking and their speaking performance at state Senior High School
