Tradition and Modernity: Women Portrayal in Shashi Deshpande’s Small Remedies

Abstract This paper seeks to construe Shashi Deshpande’s portrayal of conflict between Tradition and Modernity in her female protagonists that are belonged to middle class society,has become the victims of wedded life and its responsibilities. Her protagonists struggle to find out themselves through the completeness of experience in their lives because they are trapped between tradition and modernity. No doubt, they are disturbed by the memories of their past and feel a kind of worthlessness however; towards the end they realize their selves. This paper also studies the reason and nature of this conflict as it is continuously going on in the way of these female protagonist. It further presents that how consequently these females control over their constant conflict and fit them into such a partial society.
