Abstract In the long history of humanity and its development, woman has always been as vital as man, yet she has always been looked down upon as an inferior creature. This position of women, throughout the ages, prevails not only in family and society but also in the matters of privileges and rights. In India, Women’s condition had been much better in Indus Valley civilization which itself was a matriarchal civilization. They enjoyed many privileges even in early Vedic period. But in later Vedic period, their condition started deteriorating due to the imposition of various unnecessary moral and religious laws.
