Botanical Collars and Garlands and Their Representations in the New Kingdom and Third Intermediate Period

Ancient Egyptian botanical collars and garlands provide useful information about ancient Egyptian funerary practices and symbolism, artistic depictions of these types of objects, and other factors such as craftsmanship and horticultural practices. In addition to the botanical examples, there are also plant-form beaded replicas, as well as numerous depictions of botanical collars and garlands in tomb art. This thesis examines existing information on botanical collars and garlands and develops a corpus of published examples. The construction and materials of select examples are analyzed visually and compared with beaded replicas, along with select representations of their use in tomb art, revealing a greater understanding of their uses and symbolism. This symbolism creates multiple layers of meaning that build upon each other, including the individual materials used, the whole objects, and their representations in art
