The paper analyzes the main trends of development of the Chelyabinsk PolytechnicInstitute in the years of «perestroika». Disclosed are the main problems facedby the administration of the university and the faculty HPI in the study period.Use of structural and functional and comparative historical research methods thatreveal the dynamics of the most significant transformations in the developmentof the university in the years of «perestroika». The thesis that the CPI was able toovercome the many crises that emerged in the Soviet system of higher educationin the study period.
