Longitud y biomasa de Sargassum sinicola Setchell et Gardner (Phaeophyta) en Bahía Magdalena, B.C.S., México

Ten samplings were carried out between March 1987 and February 1988 in the distribution area of Sargassum sinicola in Bahía Magdalena, Baja California Sur. The main objective of this study was to relate the temperature, ligth and nutrients, with the length and biomass of Sargassum sinicola. The maximun mean length (0.4m) was twice of that reported for the northern Gulf of California populations. However, this maximun was low when compared to the populations from the central part of the Gulf (1.4 ± 0.4 m) and Bahía Concepción (1.97 m). The mean range of wet biomass (1.2 a 6.55kg m-2 ) was within the values reportes for he Gulf of California, but high as compared to those reported from Laguna San ignacio in the Pacific coast of Baja California for Sargassum species. Unlike Sargassum species in the Gulf of California, the maximun length and probably high bioass occur in summer and early fall, associated with the high frecuency of upwelling. In this season, low temperature, and high nitrate and phosphate concentrations are common in the surface. The measured incident irradiance was not likely to influence directly the length and biomass of Sargassum sinicola.En el período de marzo de 1987 a febrero de 1988 se efecturaon diez muestreos en el área de distribución de Sargassum sinicola Setchell et Gardner en Bahía Magdalena, B.C.S., con el propósito de determinar las condiciones de temperatura, luz y nutrientes asociadas al cambio de longitud y biomasa de Sargassum sinicola. Lamáxima longitud promedio (0.4m) es el doble de la reportada en el norte del Golfo de California; sin embargo, se considera pequeña comparada con la de la región central del Golfo (1.4 ± 0.4 m) y de Bahía Concepción (1.97 m). El intervalo promedio de biomasa húmeda (1.2 a 6.5kg m-2 ) se puede considerar dentro de las límites reportados para el Golfo de California y altos en relación a los presentados en la Laguna de San Ignacio en la costa del Pacífico de Baja California. A diferencia de las especies de Sargassu, que se presentan en el Golfo de California su mayor longitud y probablemente su mayor biomasa ocurre en los mese de verano y principios de otoño, cuando se registran con mayor frecuencia las surgencias costeras. Durante esta época es comñun encontrar temperaturas bajas y concentraciones de nitratos y fosfatos por arriba del promedio registrado en la capa superficial. La irradiancia incidente medida no pareció influir de manera determinante en los cambios de longitud y biomasa de estas algas
