Drained r esidual shear strength of stiff (overconsolidated) clays develop after some cumulative shear displacements, due to parallel alignment of plate - shaped clay particles under normal and shear stresses , in the direction of shear. Residual sh ear strength is the lowest constant shear resistance of a stiff clay and it can be obtained by ring shear or reversal direct shear box tests.
