Başkent Ankara ve Jansen

Ankara was established as the capital of Turkey on Oct.13, 1923. The decision to move the capital to central Anatolia was the result of economic, social and cultural factors in addition to factors like security and defense. Since Istanbul served not only as the political but the cultural capital for more than 1500 years to Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, the decision for this move was criticized by political circles for a long periodProf. H.Jansen won the competition for the Master Plan of Ankara in 1927; the final version was approved by the Cabinet in 1932. Jansen was İn charge of the implementation of the Master Plan until 1938. His job was then ended since he was against land speculation and fell into conflict with certain interest groups. Hence, the efforts to improve the capital by means of an organized planning process proved to be unsuccessful. It is necessary to promote legal reorganizations based on the principle that land is a natural resource, while paying due attention to the specific issues of urbanization and housing problem. The population of Ankara has rapidly increased since 1923.Therefore, the positive and negative effects of public enterprises need to be reconsidered to support an organized settlement process.
