This thesis discusses the Soviet policies regarding the emancipation of the Central Asian women in between 1917 and 1953. The work analyzes the factors that impeded and determined the outcomes of the Soviet policies. The thesis studies the Marxist feminist theory developed in the works of Marx, Engels, Lenin and Kollontai; discusses the place and role of propaganda in addressing 'woman question'; examines the main spheres where Bolsheviks dealt with the issues, such as legal, educational, cultural, production and healthcare; and, lastly, discusses the social and cultural processes in the region, such as revolt of Basmachi against the Bolsheviks, Jadids cultural and educational movement as well as the position of the conservative Islamic cle...
