Dieser Aufsatz durchmustert Trends der jüngeren englischsprachigen Literatur über japanischen Imperialismus und Kolonialismus. Die Ansätze der anglophon-vergleichenden Beschäftigung mit dem japanischen Kolonialismus haben sich in den letzten Jahren verschoben. Eine erste Generation stellte den inter-imperialen und inter-regionalen Vergleich in den Mittelpunkt. Neuere Untersuchungen entwickeln ihre Vergleichskategorien hingegen aus einer empirisch fundierten Analyse schwellennaher und grenzüberschreitender Phänomene. Insgesamt wird das japanische Imperium nicht mehr als einzigartiges Gebilde oder Summe spezifischer Beziehungen zwischen Metropole und Kolonien dargestellt.
