Os cónegos da Sé de Braga e a sociedade local (1245-1278)

The purpose of this article is to present a synthesis about the reciprocal relationship between ecclesiastics and lays, while living close, in Braga, in the Late Middle Ages. On the one hand, underlining the importance of their geographical and social origins, in order to know better about the bigger or smaller degree of their roots in the town, we tried to describe different forms of relations between these men and the local society. What ways took their behaviour and attitudes concerning an inevitable daily treatment, wished or not? What pressions or mutual influences can we note in all the proofs the history of this town, intentionally or not, had legated to us? These are the fundamental questions we try to answer to. On the other hand, through the analysis of the relationships between both parts, it is possible to conclude the high social status of the canons based, beyond their blood bows, in their considerable economic and cultural power.É objectivo deste artigo a apresentação de uma síntese sobre a reciprocidade da relação eciesiásticos-leigos, convivendo próxima e assiduamente, na cidade de Braga, durante a Baixa IdadeMédia. Por um lado, sublinhando a importância da origem geográfica e social dos cónegos, para melhor conhecermos o maior ou menor grau do seu enraizamento na cidade, procurámos descrever as diferentes formas de relacionamento entre estes e a sociedade local. Que contornos tomavam as suas atitudes e comportamentos, face a um trato diário, por inevitável, desejado ou não? Que pressões ou influências mútuas é possível distinguir nos testemunhos que a história desta cidade, intencionalmente ou não, nos legou? São estas as questões fundamentais a que tentamos dar resposta. Por outro lado, ao longo da análise das relações entre ambas as partes, é possível concluir o elevado estatuto social da canónica bracarense baseado, para além dos laços de sangue, no seu considerável poder económico e cultural
