The mail goal of the present study is to understand the relation between academic competence and social competence in students from elementary school. The participants were 75 3rd grade students, aged between 8 and 10 years old, from public and private schools in the northern Portugal. The sample included students with learning disabilities and students with high academic competence, identified by their teachers. The results highlight a strong relation between academic competence and social competence: students with learning disabilities have a significant lower level of social skills and higher level of behavior problems than students with high academic competence.
