Bariatric surgery is currently the only effective treatment for morbid obesity. Although psychiatric disorder is not considered an exclusion criterion for bariatric surgery, in the EUA this practice is delayed or denied for approximately 15% of surgery candidates due to psychological reasons. The aim of this article is to review the status of relevant literature addressing psychiatric issues in bariatric surgery, namely selection criteria and procedures towards candidates for weight loss surgery which present with psychiatric disorder, followed by discussion.
