Implementation of an undergraduate integrated design program

The integrated design project concept provides several advantages. A significant design component can be included in the curriculum without substantial changes. It is possible to select theme projects broad in scope that require interaction of several technical specialties. It encourages close cooperation of faculty members. Students can better appreciate the complexities of real world problems. It leads to increased participation of practicing engineers, particularly if the program ends with a capstone design course. It gives the student a realistic introduction to industry. The response from students and participating faculty has been most encouraging. We intend to build on three years experience and to extend the program to other departments in the college
