Satellite town development in Shanghai, China: an overview

Describes and evaluates the satellite town program in Shanghai, China. The history of satellite town development in Shanghai has been an expression of the impressive strength of central policy in China. From 1958 to the early 1960s, the program was used in order to decentralize population and economic activities from the central city to satellite towns. From the early 1960s until 1976, Shanghai authorities showed no interest in utilizing the program. Since 1977, however, the program has been used again to prevent further growth of the central city. The overall assessment is that Shanghai satellite town program has contributed to a significant increase in the number of economic activities in the city region and to the decentralization of economic activities but has failed to disperse the central city\u27s population to any significant degree. -from Author
