Major hurricanes have impacted communities along the Gulf Coast for as long as there have been people along the Gulf Coast. There are some areas along the Gulf Coast that are more impacted than others though. Hurricanes are categorized 1-5 by the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. This scale categorizes hurricanes by sustained wind speed. To be considered a “major” hurricane, it must be a category 3 or higher. Major hurricanes can bring intense and costly damage to property and can be potentially life threatening. Since the year 2000, there have been 10 major hurricanes to make landfall on the Gulf Coast.
