Oceans cover ~70% of the Earths surface and are the second largest global carbon reservoir. Major processes in marine carbon cycling are summarized in the biological carbon pump. Within the biological carbon pump, pivotal stages are the microbial loop and aggregate related processes. Within the surface layer and on aggregates, carbon is channelled within a complex food web based on microbial processes. These processes counteract the biological carbon pump, showing the importance of the microbial loop for carbon sequestration.
