Starting from a historical and geographical introduction on the current state of Latin teaching in Europe and particularly in Italy, this paper discusses the main methods currently in use for the teaching of classical languages. It is argued that the discoveries of the last decades in the field of Latin linguistics may have an important role for the renewal of teaching. A practical example of applying the perspective of contemporary linguistics to some aspects of Latin grammar is eventually proposed
