Alfonso de Cartagena, the famous converted bishop of Burgos, had a deep devotion to Santiago, forged during his deanery in Santiago de Compostela (1415-1435). As a curial and active publicist, he made effective use of the Jacobean cult, which became a propagandistic device of the Castilian royalty and crown: Santiago, apostle of Spain and defender of its monarchs (and also indirect benefactor of Compostela through the famous vows). As a clergyman of deep piety, at the end of his life he made the pilgrimage to the holy place, an eloquent testimony of devotion to Santiago, according to traditional forms (vigil, jubilee) integrated into a refined religious sensibility with a strong Christocentric influence
