The article presents an analysis of the cantata Stabat Mater for mezzo-soprano and organ by Dmitry Kitsenko (2014). The author chose for his work six stanzas of a medieval catholic sequence telling about the crucifixion of Christ and the sufferings of the Mother of God, creating a fused-cyclic four-part composition on their basis. The article discusses the content of the poetic text, the structural features and the tonal plan of the parts and of the composition in general, the musical and expressive means. On the basis of the analysis, a conclusion is made about the neoclassical features of the work, which reflects elements of compositional techniques of different eras: from the medieval organum to the baroque homophonic-harmonic prelude.
