Over the past decade, the profile of mountains on the global sustainable development agenda has increased, first with Chapter 13 – "Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development" – of Agenda 21 and more recently by the declaration of the International Year of Mountains in 2002.
