This paper provides an overview of mountain environmental problems and the role of women in conserving the mountain resource base. There is a remarkable convergence of policy objectives between the themes of sustainable development, environmental conservation, and the advancement of women. These issues are discussed and constraints and opportunities are enumerated. While both mountains and women have begun to receive more global attention in the last two decades they are not yet firmly integrated into the conservation agenda.
