In May 2002, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) designated Woodland Caribou within the Southern Mountains National Ecological Area (SMNEA) as Threatened. Two ecotypes of Woodland Caribou, mountain and northern, occur within the SMNEA. This document outlines a Strategy for the Recovery of the Mountain Caribou. A second strategy to address recovery of the Northern Caribou ecotype in BC is under preparation. An “umbrella” National Recovery Strategy that will address Woodland Caribou recovery is also under development
