OBJECTIVES:. Implantation of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as an alternative to invasive mechanical ventilation, an “awake approach,” may facilitate a lung- and diaphragm-protective ventilatory strategies without the associated harms of endotracheal intubation, positive pressure ventilation, and continuous sedation.
