Advanced Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Adaptation of the Substance Use Risk Profile Scale

Objectives:Substance Use Risk Profile scale (SURPS) measuring the personality traits associated with susceptibility to substance use is a valid and reliable questionnaire. In the validity and reliability study of the Turkish adaptation for SURPS, the factor structure was determined by the explanatory factor analysis but the theoretical suitability of this structure to the personality traits (anxiety sensitivity, lack of self-contentment, sensation seeking and impulsivity) could not be confirmed. In this study, it was aimed to test the theoretical suitability of the factor structure by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).Materials and Methods:The universe of our study was the sample consisting of 875 adolescents aged between 14 and 19 years with a mean age of 15.58 (±1.03) years for the Turkish validity and reliability study of the SURPS. The sample of our study was determined as 436 adolescents chosen from participants in the universe by stratified sampling method. IBM AMOS ver. 23.0 program was used in the verification of the factor structure of the 23-item 4-factor scale with CFA. In evaluating the fit of the model, chi-square/degree of freedom (chi-square/sd), Goodness of Fit index (GFI), Adjusted Goodness of test (AGFI) and root mean square of error approximation (RMSEA) goodness of fit indices were calculated.Results:Standardized factor loads obtained with CFA were found between 0.31 and 0.86. In order to further improve the fit of the model, the relationship between errors related to the items 7 and 23, and 3 and 12 suggested by the modification indexes was defined. The chi-square/sd, RMSEA, GFI and AGFI values from calculated goodness of fit indices were determined as 3.305, 0.058, 0.91 and 0.89, respectively.Conclusion:With our findings, it was observed that the model showed a good fit with the theory, and the construct validity of the 23-item 4-factor scale was supported
