The logistics functions of packaging: sustainable innovations toward a sustainable supply chain

Objectives of the paper. The aim of the paper is to investigate the innovation initiatives for a sustainable packaging in a logistics perspective. Methodology. The paper is organized in two parts: a theoretical part, based on literature review on logistics, packaging and sustainability; an empirical one, briefly describing some successful cases of packaging innovations towards sustainability. Findings. Packaging can contribute to achieving the business’s sustainable development goals/targets along the supply chain. The preliminary considerations arising from the theoretical and empirical insights underline that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for sustainable packaging, but many elements to be considered and evaluated for a concrete sustainable objective. Practical implications. From a logistics perspective, innovation for sustainable packaging is a potential area of interest not only for the individual firm but for the several actors in a supply chain. Limitations of the research. The paper is a first attempt to briefly explore sustainable packaging and logistics innovation, as a preliminary base for other and wider research. Originality. The paper adopts an original perspective: logistics assumes a key role for sustainable packaging innovation in theory and in practice; that may be of particular interest to both academics and professionals in different sectors and with different roles along the entire supply chain
