The Roman settlement of Peltuinum extends in the municipalities of Prata d’Ansidonia and San Pio delle Camere (province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo). Peltuinum was founded in the mid-first century BC on a lime plateau – crossed by a sheep track running east-west – rising amid a basin originally occupied by a lake, which dried up naturally at a later stage. Excavation carried out since the 1980s brought to light a number of buildings, most of which have been interpreted as dwellings installed along the via Claudia Nova, which corresponds more or less with the route of the sheep track.
