Urban regeneration and re-use: China and Europe

This Special Issue explores different aspects of urban regeneration processes in China and Europe, focusing on urban re-use as a strategy for regeneration and revitalization of urban space. In China, urban regeneration is complex: as extensive urban land use and urban sprawl coexist, and therefore urban regeneration is promoted together with urbanization. Key issues of urbanization in China include close attention to the regeneration of urban interior land, the renewal of villages within the city boundaries, and the redevelopment of industrial parks. European concerns include the policy balance of urban regeneration, the economics of industrial land in regeneration, the improvement of infrastructure, and the diversity of conservation of heritage sites. Of the many papers submitted for consideration, 12 are included in this Special Issue. The Issue is divided into three key topic areas (as Figure 1): adaptive re-use, governance models, and behavioral decisions. The three topics respectively cover the physical space, functional space, and emotional space of the city. The discussion of the three topics on three kinds of urban space cannot be viewed strictly in isolation but intersect with one another, overlapping and extending from one domain to another
