International audienceOur paper is devoted to copulative sentences with subject prounouns in French and in English and we will examine some semantic explanations on the partially complementary distribution of the third person pronoun and of the demonstrative in both languages. Our analysis will use semantic notions of classifying/non-classifying terms, of definite versus indefinite descriptions, as well as some pragmatic considerations, notably the difference between the behaviour if third person, and first and second person pronouns in direct discourse and represented speech or thought, the difference between predicational and identificational interpretations, between actual and virtual reference, and finally the notion of relevanceNotre article portera sur les phrases copulatives avec sujet pronominal en français et en anglais et nous examinerons quelques explications sémantiques sur la distribution partiellement complémentaire du pronom de troisième personne et du démonstratif dans l'une et l'autre des deux langues. Notre analyse fera usage des notions sémantiques de termes classifiants/non classifiants, de descriptions définies versus indéfinies, et d'un certain nombre de considérations pragmatiques, notamment la différence de comportement entre pronom de troisième personne et pronoms de première et deuxième personne, entre discours direct et discours indirect libre, la différence entre interprétations prédicationnelle et identificationnelle, entre référence actuelle et référence virtuelle, et enfin la notion de pertinence
