Le numérique au secours du papier: L'avenir de l'information scientifique des historiens à l'heure des réseaux (1999)

National audienceThe community of historians can no longer ignore the electronic publication, in order to comply with the new economic and scientific circumstances of publishing. Internet not only allows to relieve the classical publishing of the less profitable field of the historical research. This “ network of networks ”can also found a worldwide Republic of Humanities which still is nothing but a utopia. The electronic publishing should not be considered as a gimmick for the tabloid press as it possesses new advantages and is backed up by E-mail thanks to which the international scientific debate can develop. On the contrary it tends to become a major instrument which, when it is mastered, will dictate a new scientific geography in which the French were not the leaders at the beginning of 1999. After showing the advantages of Internet and answering its numerous detractors, this article will draw up the balance sheet of the historians' attendance on the Web and give a quick initiation to the network (navigation, lists, publication).Pour répondre aux nouvelles conditions économiques et scientifiques de l'édition, la communauté des historiens ne peut plus ignorer la publication électronique. Internet n'est pas seulement capable de soulager l'édition classique des secteurs les moins rentables de la recherche historique : le “ réseau des réseaux ” peut fonder une République mondiale des Lettres qui n'est, pour l'instant, qu'une utopie. Disposant d'atouts inédits, épaulée par le courrier électronique comme nouvel outil de débat scientifique international, l'édition électronique ne doit plus être considérée comme un gadget pour médias en mal de sensationnel. Elle tend au contraire à s'affirmer comme un outil majeur dont la maîtrise dictera une nouvelle géographie scientifique au sein de laquelle l'histoire francophone n'occupait pas une position centrale au début de l'année 1999. Après avoir tenté de démontrer les atouts scientifiques d'Internet et de répondre à ses nombreux détracteurs, cet article dresse le bilan de la présence des historiens sur le Web et propose une rapide initiation aux trois principales utilisations du réseau (navigation, listes, publication)
