The aim of this paper is to focus on the multidimensional aspect of sustainable development and on the legal implications. Although in 1987 sustainable development was defined by the United Nations Environment Programme as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”, nowadays it lacks a more precise legal definition; therefore, legislators struggle to implement it effectively. Law should identify an adequate balance between all the different interests involved, which are the expression of the interdependence between social and economic development and environmental protection.
