Frictions test under pressure : Development of friction test rig

This thesis was done for RUAG Space AB, which is a supplier of products in the space industry with distribution across large parts of the world. The company develops and manufactures a range of products in area such as electronics, mechanics, and mechatronics. These products are both developed and tested by the company. One of the tests that the company performs is friction tests, these are performed to obtain the coefficient of friction for different materials and different coatings.The frictions tests that are performed measures the coefficient of friction between two objects that are subjected to a high load, for this type of friction tests there is currently no ready to be purchased solution. The company has a self-constructed test rig to perform these types of tests,but this does not currently produce results within the company’s quality parameters and needs to be upgraded or replaced. The purpose of this thesis was to do this and present a solution to the company. Two research questions were asked during this thesis, and they were:Q1: What factors affect the accuracy of friction tests?Q2: How can an updated / new design of a friction test rig look like?Along with these questions some goals were set, these were to improve; Testing time, Ergonomics, and Results.The work of this thesis followed a modified product development process that was focused on concept development, this because the problem was provided, and the result was not to be put in production. During the work, interviews and studies were conducted to gather enough information to be able to develop a concept that fulfilled the goals and answered the researchquestions. The result was a redesign of the construction with an associated automation part. This resultedin a design that was improved in the areas of, Weight, Size, Ergonomics, and Time. The construction was designed by the thesis student and the automation part was designed in collaboration with various companies whose products was used in the solution. For the tests to produce results within the company’s quality parameters, cleanliness and climate must be controlled for the testing space and the test samples. The construction also requires a certain straightness as the forces acting on the friction test samples must not be at an angle of error; this leads to the coefficient becoming incorrect. All sensors involved also needs to be calibrated correctly. According to the calculations made, the new design has the potential to improve the company’s friction tests. Since the result was theoretical, the result was evaluated using tolerance calculations and ergonomic estimates.The thesis has opportunities for further development and investigation in various areas, if for example the test procedure changes, then changes can be made to the design. Det här arbetet gjordes åt företaget RUAG Space AB, som är en leverantör av produkter inom rymdindustrin med spridning över stora delar av världen. Företaget utvecklar och tillverkar en mängd olika produkter inom områden så som elektronik, mekanik, och mekatronik. Dessa produkter både utvecklas och testas av företaget. En typ av tester som företaget utför är friktionstester för att få fram friktionskoefficienten för olika material och olika ytbeläggningar. Friktionstesterna som utförs mäter friktionskoefficienten mellan två objekt som belastas med stort tryck, för denna typ av friktionstester finns idag ingen färdig lösning utan företaget själva har en testrigg som utför dessa tester. Denna rigg producerar inte idag resultat inom företagets kvalitetsparametrar och behöver uppgraderas eller bytas ut. Syftet med arbetet var att göra detta och presentera en lösning till företaget. Två forskningsfrågor ställdes under arbetet och de var: F1: Vilka faktorer påverkar noggrannheten vid friktionstester? F2: Hur kan en uppdaterad/ny konstruktion av en friktionstestrigg se ut? Till dessa frågor ställdes även vissa mål med arbetet, dessa var att förbättra; Testtiden, Ergonomin, och Resultatet. Arbetet följde en anpassad produktutvecklingsprocess där fokus låg på konceptutvecklingen då arbetet redan var definierat och inte slutade i en tillverkning. Under arbetet genomfördes intervjuer och undersökningar för att samla tillräckligt med information för att kunna utveckla ett koncept som uppfyllde arbetets mål och besvarade frågeställningarna. Resultatet av arbetet var en omdesign av testriggens konstruktion med en tillhörande automationsdel. Detta resulterade i en konstruktion som var förbättrad inom områdena; Vikt, Storlek, Ergonomi, och Tid. Konstruktionen designades av examensarbetaren själv och automationsdelen utformades i samverkan med olika företag vars produkter används i lösningen. För att testerna ska ge resultat inom företagets kvalitetsparametrar måste renhet och klimat kontrolleras för testutrymmet och testbitarna. Konstruktionen kräver även en viss rakhet eftersom krafterna som inverkar på friktionstestbitarna inte får vara felvinklade, detta leder till att friktionskoefficienten blir felaktig. Alla inblandade sensorer måste också kalibreras till korrekt angivelse. Enligt de beräkningar som gjordes har den nya konstruktionen möjlighet att förbättra företagets friktionstester. Eftersom resultatet var teoretiskt utvärderades resultatet med hjälp av toleransberäkningar och ergonomiska uppskattningar. Arbetet har möjlighet för vidareutveckling och undersökning inom olika områden, om till exempel testproceduren ändras i framtiden, kan designen av konstruktionen ändras
