Transformative leadership : A study of young adult’s experiences of transformative leadership in managers and sports leaders

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of which transformative leadership is perceived by the respondents in sport leadership respectively managers. Previous studies have shown that managers have a lot to learn from sports leaders and that there are also similarities and differences between the different forms of leadership. Differences in inspiring motivations, personal considerations, intellectual stimulation, and similarities in idealized influence. To carry out the study, a quantitative approach was used where data was collected using surveys. The study´s sample group consisted of young adults who had encountered a sport leader and a business leader and were between 19 – 30 years old. In total there were 101 people who answered the questionnaire. The results of the study showed that the respondents experienced a more transformative leadership in their sports leaders than they did in their managers. But it is not possible to draw a more certain conclusion that the transformative leadership are more common in any sport or industry. The result of the study is in line with previous studies that have showed a similar result. Where certain parts of the transformative leadership show more differences of the respondents experienced, than the other parts. For example, motivation stands out in a positive sense with sport leadership and in a negative sense with managers.
