Venezuela's Economic Failure : A case of the natural resource curse?

Många studier har gjorts kring fenomenet som kallas naturresursförbannelsen. Enligt detta fenomen finns det en betydande koppling mellan svag ekonomisk prestanda och stora naturresursreserver inom ett land. Med fokus på utvinning av olja avser detta dokument att belysa Venezuelas historiska och nuvarande ekonomiska situation och teorierna kring resursförbannelsen. Resultaten i denna uppsats ger oss en viss klarhet i hur och varför Venezuela är en resursberoende ekonomi och att detta har lett till den katastrofala situation som landet befinner sig i idag. Resultatet jag kommit fram till i denna studie är att krisen som Venezuela är i idag kommer från en kombination av stora oljetillgångar, dåliga politiska beslut och bristfälliga institutioner.Many studies have been made around the phenomenon called the natural resource curse. According to this phenomenon, there is a considerable connection between weak economic performance and large natural resource reserves within a country. With a focus on the extraction of oil, this paper intends to cast light upon Venezuela's historical and current economic situation and the theories surrounding the resource curse. The results in this paper are giving us some clarity on how and why Venezuela is a resource dependent economy and that this has led up the catastrophic situation the country is in today. The conclusion of this study is that the crisis that Venezuela is in today comes from a combination of large oil resources, bad political decisions and deficient institutions
