Usage de la télédétection dans un contexte pluridisciplinaire : impact de l'orpaillage, agriculture amérindienne et régénération naturelle dans une région du territoire Yanomami (Amazonie brésilienne)

In order to propose solutions to this situation, a multidisciplinary team was formed in 2002 at the request of the Pro-Yanomami Commission (CCPY), a Brazilian nongovernmental organization, to study one of the most problematic regions, known as Homoxi, located on the upper Mucajaí River in the state of Roraima in northern Brazil.The first aim of the study was to measure the extent of the environmental damage, implying the use of GIS and analysis of Landsat TM/ETM+ images. However, such tools are not easily employed in the Homoxi region, since it is an area of highlands covered almost permanently in clouds and fog. From 1985 to 2002, satellites were able to capture only two images of this region with adequate quality. The information they provided made it feasible, through various interpretive techniques (from visual interpretation to supervised classification), to generate quantitative data on gold panners' activities and land-use by local Yanomami groups. Such data, in turn, made it possible to evaluate the environmental impacts of the miners' actions, the extent of the natural regeneration of the forest, and the dynamics of the Yanomami settlement pattern in such areas.The research team was able to show that the amount of land surfaces directly impacted by the gold panners represents about 700 hectares in the Homoxi region. One portion of these surfaces was already beginning to regain aspects of a primary forest in 2002; another portion revealed aspects of secondary forest; while yet another (about 200 hectares) was still totally exposed and needed to be restored through environmental intervention.Primary data on Yanomami settlements (locations, population density) could not be obtained directly by remote sensing because of the geographic characteristics of the highlands and the small size of the collective round houses typical of Yanomami villages in this region. Secondary data, however, such as the location of gardens, made it possible to get a clear idea of the overall dynamics of local settlement and migration patterns. With the help of indigenous informants, the research team was thus able to retrace the migratory itinerary of two local groups over the last twenty years.Suite à l'invasion de leur territoire traditionnel par des milliers de chercheurs d'or à la fin des années 1980, de nombreux groupes Yanomami du Brésil se trouvent aujourd'hui dans une situation socio-économique préoccupante, leur environnement forestier, sur lequel repose l'intégralité de leur apport alimentaire, ayant été sévèrement dégradé. Afin de proposer des solutions pour remédier à cette situation, une équipe pluridisciplinaire a été formée en 2002 à la demande d'une ONG locale, la CCPY, pour étudier l'une des régions les plus problématiques, à savoir la zone de « Homoxi » (haut rio Mucajaí, état de Roraima, nord du Brésil). Afin de quantifier l'importance des dégradations liées à l'action des chercheurs d'or et évaluer leurs impacts sur le système productif des groupes yanomami il fut décidé d'incorporer dans l'étude une composante SIG et télédétection, dont le rôle devait être de fournir, à partir de l'étude d'images Landsat TM et ETM+, des données quantitatives sur l'intensité de l'activité des orpailleurs et la présence amérindienne locale. Par l'utilisation de données diachroniques, on espérait également pouvoir obtenir des informations sur la dynamique de l'orpaillage et sur la question de la régénération naturelle de la forêt tropicale. Cet article présente les résultats des travaux réalisés sur la région de Homoxi en discutant de diverses options méthodologiques disponibles, tout en insistant sur le défi que représente l'usage de la télédétection dans une région de fort relief et d'ennuagement permanent et pour la détection d'objets de petite taille. Malgré la faible quantité de données disponibles, des résultats quantitatifs permettent d'évaluer l'ampleur de la ruée vers l'or qui a affecté la zone (1988-1998), et de tirer des conclusions sur la dynamique du peuplement yanomami. Cette étude démontre enfin la richesse des interactions possibles entre les moyens cartographiques issus du monde des SIGs et de la télédétection avec la connaissance intime que les peuples amérindiens possèdent de leur environnement
