Des revêtements appelés barrières environnementales sont en cours de développement afin de protéger les Composites à Matrice Céramique (SiC/SiC) utilisés pour les pièces situées dans les parties chaudes des futures générations de turboréacteurs. Le mécanisme de ruine le plus observé pour ce type de revêtement est une délamination suite à leur oxydation en présence de vapeur d’eau. En service, la vapeur d’eau diffuse à travers le revêtement en silicate de terre rare et forme par réaction avec la sous-couche en silicium une couche de silice, appelée TGO (Thermally Grown Oxide).
