A Study of the Status of the Music Background of the 1937 Summer Graduating Class at Prairie View State College

The purpose of this thesis is to show the place of music in the background and education of the senior summer class of 1937 and how the institutional agencies have affected them. We have tried to show these things on the basis of a percentage rate as they really manifested themselves in the 90 schools that were represented by the 125 graduates. On a whole, the schools should be commended for their persistent efforts in trying to promote some kind of music. We have studied the personnel to find out what advantages had been taken to acquire some kind of music also to find out their attitudes toward music. We then set up an ideal situation in the first chapter that it might help some who have been misdirected or have concluded wrongly as to the value of Music. Questionaires were sent to the 1937 summer graduating class of Prairie View State College which numbered 125 members who were candidates for degrees. The writer must confess only one Bachelor of Arts in Music (Miss Willie Vivian Hoyt, Nacogdoches, Texas) who has done a creditable piece of work in the field of music. The schools were surveyed to ascertain their music offerings and facilities also the music background of the class members. All of the information obtained has been complied and rated as to the percentage of those who have or have not accepted certain advantages
