Bu çalışmada, gruplar arası karşılaştırmalı model kullanılmıştır Araştırma grubunu 48 sigara içen ve 51 sigara içmeyen katılımcı oluşturmaktadır. Grupta 18-30 yaş arası 51 kişi, 31 yaş ve üstünde olan 48 kişi bulunmaktadır. Ayrıca katılımcıların 50'si kadın, 49'u ise erkektir. Araştırmanın bağımsız değişkenleri sigara kullanımı ile yaş ve cinsiyet, bağımlı değişkenleri ise akustik parametreler (Praat/F0, Jitter ve Shimmer), algısal parametreler (CAPE-V/genel etkilenme derecesi, kabalık, nefeslilik, efor, perde ve gürlük) ve s/z oranı, maksimum fonasyon süresi (MFS) ile ses handikap endeksi (SHE) puanlarıdır.
