Comparison of serum folic acid, vitamin B12 levels and nutritional status of the elderly people with and without dementia

Bu çalışmada, demans tanısı alan ve almayan yaşlıların serum folik asit, vitamin B12 düzeyleri ve beslenme durumlarını karşılaştırmak amaçlanmıştır. Bu vitaminlerin eksiklikleri Demans için risk faktörü olarak görülmektedir. Yapılan bu çalışma Ağustos-Eylül 2017 tarihleri arasında İstanbul Darülaceze Müdürlüğü Kayışdağı Tesislerinde yaşayan 60 yaş ve üzeri, demans tanısı almış ve almamış olan her iki gruptan da 52 kadın ve 29 erkek olmak üzere toplam 162 yaşlı birey üzerinde yürütüldü. Bireylerin genel bilgileri, sağlık durumları, antropometrik ve biyokimyasal ölçümleri kurumun doktoru ve hemşireleri tarafından tutulan dosyalardan kaydedildi. Beş günlük besin tüketim kayıtları ile enteral ürün ve toz protein alım miktarları ise hastabakıcı veya hemşireler gözetiminde alındı. İstatistiksel değerlendirmede Student's-t independent, Ki-kare ve Pearson korelasyon Testi kullanıldı. Veriler SPSS 18.0 istatistik paket programında değerlendirildi. Demans olan bireylerin serum glukoz, folik asit, ALT, albümin, potasyum (p0,05) değerleri demans olmayanlara göre daha düşük bulundu. Diyetle günlük protein, yağ, kolesterol, vitamin A, D, B1, B2, B6, B12, kalsiyum alımları demans olan grupta daha yüksek; karbonhidrat, diyet lifi, folik asit, demir, sodyum, magnezyum alımları daha düşük bulundu (p0,05). Sonuç olarak demanslıların serum folik asit ve vitamin B12 düzeyleri daha düşük bulunduğundan, bu bireylere takviye verilmelidir. Demanslı bireyler enteral ürün desteği aldığından beslenme durumları demans olmayanlarla paralellik göstermiştir.In this study, it is aimed to compare the serum folic acid and vitamin B12 levels of the elderly people with and without dementia and their nutritional status. Deficiency of these vitamins is regarded as a risk factor for Dementia. This work was carried out on 162 elderly individuals in total, living in Istanbul Directorate of Hospice Kayışdağı Facility, aged 60 years and over, among whom are 52 females and 29 males who were diagnosed with dementia and not diagnosed with dementia, between August-September 2017. General information, health conditions, anthropometric and biochemical measurements of the elderly individuals were registered from the files held by the doctor and the nurses of the institution. The five-day dietary record and enteral product and powder protein intake quantities were taken under the supervision of the caregiver or the nurses. Student's-t independent, Chi-square and Pearson correlation test were used for statistical evaluation. Datas were evaluated on SPSS 18.0 packaged software. Serum glucose, folic acid, ALT, albumin, potassium (p0,05) levels of the people with dementia were found lower than those without dementia. Daily intake of protein, fat, cholesterol, vitamins A, D, B1, B2, B6, B12, calcium were higher in the group with dementia; carbohydrate, dietary fiber, folic acid, iron, sodium, magnesium were lower (p0,05). Serum folic acid and vitamin B12 levels of those with dementia are lower, so these individuals should be supplemented.
