Bu çalışmada, demans tanısı alan ve almayan yaşlıların serum folik asit, vitamin B12 düzeyleri ve beslenme durumlarını karşılaştırmak amaçlanmıştır. Bu vitaminlerin eksiklikleri Demans için risk faktörü olarak görülmektedir. Yapılan bu çalışma Ağustos-Eylül 2017 tarihleri arasında İstanbul Darülaceze Müdürlüğü Kayışdağı Tesislerinde yaşayan 60 yaş ve üzeri, demans tanısı almış ve almamış olan her iki gruptan da 52 kadın ve 29 erkek olmak üzere toplam 162 yaşlı birey üzerinde yürütüldü. Bireylerin genel bilgileri, sağlık durumları, antropometrik ve biyokimyasal ölçümleri kurumun doktoru ve hemşireleri tarafından tutulan dosyalardan kaydedildi.
