Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics in males receiving treatment for heroin dependence

Amaç: Eroin bağımlılığı somatik, psikolojik ve davranışsal belirtileri olan, süreğenlik ve yineleme gösteren önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunudur. Çalışmamızda eroin bağımlılığı nedeniyle tedavi alan erkeklerin sosyo-demografik ve klinik özelliklerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem:Çalışmaya AMATEM polikliniğinde ayaktan tedavi gören ve DSM-IV TR tanı ölçütlerine göre eroin bağımlılığı tanısı almış ardışık 18 yaş üstü 75 erkek hasta alındı. Klinisyenler tarafından oluşturulan yarı-yapılandırılmış sosyo-demografik görüşme formu dolduruldu. Bulgular: Hastaların yaş ortalaması 27.24±4.65 (yıl), ortalama eğitim süresi 9.76±2.83 (yıl) olarak saptandı. Hastaların %33.3’ü (n=25) evli, %76’sı (n=57) herhangi bir işte çalışmaktaydı. Sigara kullanmaya başladıkları yaş ortalama 14.67±3.29 (yıl), herhangi bir madde kullanmaya başladıkları yaş ortalama 18.23±4.26 (yıl) olarak saptandı. Hastaların %12’sinde (n=9) ailede madde kullanma öyküsü, %12’sinde (n=9) herhangi bir yolla intihar girişimi öyküsü mevcuttu. İlk kullanılan madde %72’sinde (n=54) esrar, %14.7’sinde (n=11) eroindi. Sonuç: Sonuç olarak bu popülasyonda madde kullanmaya başlama yaşının oldukça düşük olduğu, ilk kullanılan maddenin çoğunlukla esrar olduğu, eroin bağımlılığı tedavi süresinin uzun olduğu saptanmıştır. Bulgularımızın ülkemizin diğer bölgelerinde eroin bağımlılığı nedeniyle tedavi alan kişilerle karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilmesine katkı sağlayabileceği düşünülmüştür.Objective: Heroin addiction is an important public health problem with somatic, psychological and behavioral symptoms, persistence and relapse. In this study, we aimed to determine the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of men who received treatment for heroin dependence. Material and Method: Seventy-five consecutive male patients over 18 years of age who were diagnosed with opioid dependence according to DSM-IV TR diagnostic criteria and completed the detoxification process were included in the study. All patients were assessed by using a semi-structured socio-demographic form. Results: The mean age of the patients was 27.24 ± 4.65 (years), and the mean education duration was 9.76 ± 2.83 (years).33.3% (n = 25) of the patients were married, 76% (n = 57) were with employment. The mean age at which the patients started smoking was 14.67 ± 3.29 (years), and the mean age at which the patients started using any substance was 18.23 ± 4.26 (years).There was a positive family history of substance use in 12% (n = 9) of the patients, and 12% (n=9) of the patients had a positive history of suicide attempt. The first substance used was cannabis in 72% (n = 54) and heroin in 14.7% (n = 11) of the patients. Conclusion: In this study, it was found that the age at onset of substance use in this population is very low, the first substance used was mostly cannabis, and the treatment period of heroin dependence was long. It is thought that our findings may contribute to the comparison of patients who received treatment for heroin addiction in other regions of our country
