The rise of nationalism in the European Union member states and its effects on Turkey-EU relations

Turkish willingness to become a member of the European Union(EU) is not a sufficient condition for becoming a member since this is a mutual process which involves the political willingness of both sides. In other words, Turkey needs the approval of all the EU member states. There are different opinions within the Union about Turkey like about all other issues, but the rise of the far-right since the post-Cold War era makes the situation more difficult for the proponents of Turkey. The overall purpose of this thesis is to analyze the reasons behind the rise of new nationalism and the far-right parties in the EU member states and then, to assess the possible effects of this on Turkey - EU relations, particularly, on Turkey's prospective membership of the EU, and the impacts of Turkish immigrant population living in the EU member states on this process. In this context, this research also includes the historical development of nationalism in Europe to provide the reader with a historical perspective with regards to the emergence of nationalism and its historical evolution. In addition to the historical development of nationalism in Europe, this thesis further evaluates the emergence of the idea of Europe, and European perceptions of Turkish identity from the Ottoman Empire to today with a view to shedding light on the current evolution of Turkey-EU relations. ÖZ Türkiye'nin Avrupa Birliği (AB) 'ye üye olma arzusu, bu sürecin karşılıklı olmasından dolayı yani her iki tarafında istekli olmasını gerektirdiğinden, üye olmak için yeterli değildir. Diğer bir deyişle, Türkiye'nin tam üyelik için diğer tüm üye ülkelerin onayına ihtiyacı vardır. Diğer konularda olduğu gibi AB içerisinde Türkiye ile ilgili farklı fikirler vardır, ancak Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönemde aşırı sağın yükselişi Türkiye'nin üyeliğini savunanlar için durumu daha zorlaştırmıştır. Bu tezin amacı AB üye devletlerindeki yükselen yeni milliyetçiliğin arkasında yatan sebepleri analiz etmek ve bu artan milliyetçiliğin Türkiye-AB ilişkileri üzerindeki etkileri, özellikle de Türkiye'nin AB'ne olası üyeliği ve AB üye devletleri'nde yaşayan Türk nüfusun bu süreç üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendirmektir. Bu araştırma ayrıca okuyucuya milliyetçiliğin ortaya çıkışı ve tarihsel evrimi ile ilgili tarihsel bir perspektif sağlamak için Avrupa'daki milliyetçiliğin tarihsel gelişimini de içermektedir. Milliyetçiliğin Avrupa'daki tarihsel gelişiminden başka Avrupa fikrinin ortaya çıkışı ve Avrupa'lının Osmanlı'dan günümüze Türk kimliğini algılayışına da Türkiye-AB ilişkilerinin günümüzdeki gelişimine ışık tutarak değerlendirmektedir
