The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effects of a designerly approach to data analytics. The research was conducted during the Interaction Design Master program at Malmö University in 2017 and follows a research through design approach where the material driven design process in itself becomes a way to acquire new knowledge. The thesis uses big data as design material for designers to ideate connected products and services in the context of smart city applications. More specifically, it conducts a series of material studies that show the potential of this new perspective to data analytics.
