International audienceIn French Polynesia, religious membership is an essential point of reference. Formerly, identity was inseparably given by the religion, the family and the island of origin. Because of the economic and social evolution, and of the contemporary diversity of the churches settled in French Polynesia, this combination is now more uncertain and flexible. Then, the churches which are involved in the incorporation of Christianity in the cultures of the Polynesian communities need to redefine the cultural identities that they want to respect.
