Wetlands are critical natural ecosystems which play a significant role by sustaining biodiversity, filtering water, buffering against flooding and sequestrating large amounts of carbon. However, these functions could be changed with the construction of ditches to lower the water table for agricultural or forestry purposes. With the advent of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEM), it is now possible to use automatic delineation parameters to identify ditches in wetlands. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the drainage status of forested peatland based on plot-ditch distances using high-resolution DEM and GIS procedures.
