There is a growing interest and demand in our community for recreation and other activities. One such activity is swimming coupled with the use of water playgrounds. Recent decades have seen the construction of new buildings with swimming pools, water parks and spa facilities, the conversion of older buildings with swimming pools to include new activities, and the integration of spas into old buildings. There are a range of solutions for dealing with the heavy moisture load found in these buildings, but the number of completed follow-up studies is very low. It is the experience of many contractors that they find it a challenge to produce moisture safe buildings which contain swimming pools and spas. This project has been designed to increase the knowledge of buildings with swimming pool and spa facilities in terms of moisture safety, particularly in the building envelope (exterior walls and roof) but also internal partition walls. The project has demonstrated that there is a need for systematic efforts to ensure moisture safety in buildings containing swimming pools and spas. Above all, the risk of moisture convection represents a challenge that needs to be considered in order to avoid damage to the building envelopes in these facilities. Below are some useful principles that have emerged from the project for improving the moisture safety in the planning and production of these buildings with a focus in particular on the risk of moisture convection. Initially the conditions are established for the planning and design of a new construction, reconstruction and extension. Select principles for the building envelope. If you want to reduce the risk of damage due to moisture convection, there are several options available: - Ensure an internal negative pressure, - Air-tight structures - Use of moisture-resistant materials - Install alarm functions for temperature, air humidity and especially pressure. - You can improve moisture resistance by applying many of these principles at the same time. Select zoning within the building and plan for air tightness and possible heat insulation in separating walls and floor structures. Aim for a negative pressure in the humid zones. Apply the tools available for ensuring moisture safety (ByggaF) and for building airtight structures (ByggaL).
