Digital Health Education for Self-Management: A Systematic Literature Review

The potential of digital health education for self-management lacks a comprehensive understanding in the literature. To address this challenge, we conduct a systematic review of studies on health IT, health informatics, and health education. Integrating Stimulus-Response mechanisms in Skinner\u27s reinforcement theory with Stages of Changes in the Transtheoretical Model, we propose a conceptual framework to accommodate and classify research in digital health education for self-management: the delivery method and content of digital health education, and their impacts on selfmanagement process and effectiveness on health outcomes. We identify three research gaps that need substantial attention and effort from IS scholars: (i) limited focus on public health education, (ii) inadequate evaluation of digital interventions for health education, and (iii) insufficient work on addressing self-management challenges via digital technology. We suggest future research directions for digital health education
