The effect of debating activities on the speaking anxiety of Turkish teacher candidates

In this study, the effect of debate activities on Turkish teacher candidates’ speech anxiety was examined. The study group consisted of 29 first-year students in the Turkish teacher education department. The research was designed as a sequential explanatory mixed method study. The Speech Anxiety Scale and the semi-structured interview technique were used to collect data. In order to reduce the speech anxiety of Turkish teacher candidates, debate activities were held for five weeks. The Speech Anxiety Scale was used to determine the level of preservice teachers’ speaking anxiety before and after the study. Repeated measures t- test was used in the analysis of the obtained quantitative data. The opinions of the preservice teachers about the activities were obtained through semistructured interviews conducted at the end of the study. The collected quantitative and qualitative data showed that debate activities were effective in decreasing the speech anxiety of teacher candidates. Discussion activities in small groups in front of the whole class reduced the students’ speech anxiety and increased classroom interaction among the participants.Bu araştırmada, münazara etkinliklerinin Türkçe öğretmeni adaylarının konuşma kaygısı üzerindeki etkisi incelemiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, Türkçe öğretmenliği birinci sınıfta öğrenim gören 29 öğrencidir. Araştırma sıralı açıklayıcı karma yöntemde tasarlanmıştır. Araştırma için veri toplamada Konuşma Kaygısı Ölçeği ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniğinden yararlanılmıştır. Öğretmen adaylarının konuşma kaygılarını azaltmak için beş hafta münazara etkinlikleri yapılmıştır. Öğretmen adaylarının uygulama öncesi ve sonrası konuşma kaygılarının düzeyini belirlemek için KKÖ kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen nicel verilerin analizinde tekrarlı ölçümler t testi kullanılmıştır. Bununla birlikte uygulama sonunda yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği ile öğretmen adaylarının uygulama etkinlikleri hakkındaki görüşleri alınmıştır. Elde edilen nicel ve nitel veriler, münazara etkinliklerinin öğretmen adaylarının konuşma kaygılarının azalmasında etkili olduğu-nu göstermiştir. Küçük gruplarla bütün sınıf önünde yapılan tartışma etkinlikleri, öğrencilerin hem konuşma kaygılarını azaltmakta hem de birbirleri ile olan sınıf içi iletişimlerini artırmaktadır
