International audienceHow is it possible for an Arabist philologist to classify both ahmada = "to find commendable" and alâma = "to show oneself blameable" as "estimative" verbs? We will show, in the first part of this article which is connected to the history of linguistics that the confusion comes from a much too hasty reading of Arab grammarians: 'ahmada and alâma are issued from two different kinds of verbs respectively "tropative" (< lat. tropare = to find, ar. wugûd) and "deventive" (< lat. devenire = to become, ar. sayrûra) but in an intersecting relation by means of a third "meritative" value (istihqâq).
