Science education in a narrative-structural and process drama-oriented context : A qualitative study of how a storytelling and a playful improvisational-theatrical context contributes to how the youngest students in primary school can assimilate the content of physics teaching regarding the phenomenon of sound

The purpose of this study was to contribute with more knowledge about and, if so, how children aged 6-7 years can achieve understanding of scientific phenomena when their imagination and natural theatrical play are used in teaching. The study was conducted through the methods of action research and qualitative interview, which gave the researcher the opportunity to test ideas and thoughts directly in the school environment. The intervention consisted of a pedagogical activity designed as a combination of narrative structure and process drama as well as a couple of experiments around the phenomenon of sound. The intervention and the interviews were recorded with audio and video, which gave rise to concrete, clear and detailed data material. The results showed that the students became curious and interested through the narrative structural story context and they chose to connect scientific concepts with the story and they used it as a common reference when they discussed scientific phenomena. The narrative structure contributed to the students participating in scientific conversations in a seemingly easy and carefree way. Narrative structure was found to be a well-suited didactic tool to use in learning, not just as a fictional element in the school subjects Swedish and English. Narrative structure in itself or in combination with process drama can potentially be very rewarding for learning in different subjects, especially for the youngest students in primary school.Syftet med den här studien var att bidra med mer kunskap om och i så fall hur barn i åldern 6-7 år uppnår förståelse för naturvetenskapliga fenomen när deras fantasi och den naturliga teatrala leken används i undervisningen. Studien genomfördes genom metoderna aktionsforskning och kvalitativ intervju, vilket gav forskaren möjlighet att testa idéer och tankar direkt i verksamheten. Interventionen bestod av en pedagogisk aktivitet designad som en kombination av berättarstruktur och processdrama samt ett par experiment kring fenomenet ljud. Interventionen och intervjuerna spelades in med ljud- och videoupptagning vilket gav upphov till konkret, tydligt och detaljerat datamaterial. I resultatet framgick det att eleverna blev till synes nyfikna och intresserade genom den berättarstrukturella sagokontexten och de valde att koppla samman naturvetenskapliga begrepp med sagan. Vidare använde de den som en gemensam referens när de tillsammans med pedagogen samtalade om naturvetenskapliga fenomen. Berättarstrukturen bidrog till att eleverna på ett till synes lätt och obekymrat sätt deltog i naturvetenskapliga samtal. Berättarstruktur verkar vara ett väl lämpat didaktiskt verktyg att använda sig av inom lärande, inte bara som ett skönlitterärt inslag i ämnena svenska och engelska. Berättarstruktur kan i sig självt eller i kombination med processdrama potentiellt vara mycket givande för lärande inom olika ämnen, speciellt för de yngsta eleverna i grundskolan
