The human pluripotent leukemia cell line, K562, spontaneously produces variable quantities of Hb Gower I (=ε2ζ2) and Hb Bart's (=γ4). The Hb production of K562 cells is stimulated by hemin and some other compounds. The possibility of manipulating the production of different hemoglobins is of great interest because it might help to identify biochemical mechanisms which could regulate the switching of embryonic to fetal to adult Hb biosynthesis. However, K562 cells demonstrate a great variability in the quantities and types of Hb produced in response to hemin.peer-reviewe
